Piñata Time

Hello friends,

Eric’s birthday: 01/30/2022 turned the big 3.6.

Two weeks before I was trying to figure out what to get him for his birthday. Ideas were: snuggie from Jeju we loved, problem is how to order, ordering in Korea is very hard from many reasons. I looked at his residual Christmas list on Elfster for ideas to order on Coupang. I almost bought his Nausicaa of the Wind box set, which he ended up ordering anyway from birthday money. I ended up buying him his Hero Forge figurine building set for his DnD character. Easy.

(I also ended up buying the Snuggie but had his help in purchasing online.)

I then wanted to plan a party, I went ahead and asked him what he wanted to do (low on money, low on things we can do ie: pandemic) I suggested that we do dinner with our friends, he said he wanted a lounge party in the dorms, and that he wanted tacos. Great! then found a piñata to go along with the taco idea. I ordered one on Coupang.

The week of his birthday we had talked of doing things over the weekend, we were waiting to hear what days we would have off for the Lunar New Year. We found out on Tuesday we’d have Monday-Wednesday off, so we could have a proper Sunday birthday party. Tuesday came and went: Eric was super busy with Adult Program stuffs. We already told a few people it was his birthday and we tentatively we’re planning on a party. He sent the message - save the date - come to the lounge, enticement sent.

We went shopping on Friday night for taco food, it cost an arm and a leg: ₩162,000. Oh well, we were happy to provide. After we, traversed to our “favorite” (aka convenient) coffee shop Pascucci’s to wait for our bus with a hot cup of hot coco, BUT we got kicked out because Eric hasn’t had his booster yet :(((. So we waited in the cold for our bus and asked friends about the website where Eric can sign up for his booster - we made it productive.

Sunday arrived we prepared (mise en place-ed) the food at 11:30 am, Eric cracked into one of his Corona beers. Everything was ready we were listening to music, started to try to read, but a buzz was in the air. We waited for people to arrive at 1:15 pm - Eric made a “dining room table” and everyone that came in and saw it started to laugh, it’s an unusual setup for the lounge. People trickled in we had everything set out for food, I dished up first, Eric declined to be first as offered by Nicole, I dished up, Nicole dished up, then Selassie and Jemima who finished off all of the meat. Saved nothing for everyone else: Eric, Dana, and Amy who eventually showed up. Yikes. Eric was pretty upset. I worried with 10+ people we could easily run out. Amy went and ate downstairs as did Kevin but he forgot about the party so he doesn’t count (joking) problem solved.

We finished food and started playing Apples to Apples. Which was a blast. All of our games have been wonderful group events, a handful so far by now. So many jokes, so much laughter, we really do enjoy each other and get along well. There is just a jovial nature to us all, we aren’t sick of each other yet. We played for a few hours maybe two, Nicole had a cake baked and announced it was ready. We played a few more rounds when it came to me I said “I’d love to keep playing but I also want to know when we get to eat cake” knowing she spent a lot of time on it. We played two more rounds then had cake.

The cake was so incredible, it was moist, it was chocolate, it was fluffy it had a drippy chocolate frosting - oh boy, I’ll be thinking about that cake for years. It was like the best kind of upgraded boxed chocolate cake and I mean upgraded proper ingredients and flavor - what I always want those cakes to be.

Then we got into the piñata. Eric and I had planned for how to rig up the unicorn, we grabbed a pole from the gym that Korean staff sometimes use for martial arts. We grabbed a workout band that had carabiners on the end, tied it tight, and the pinata got filled with coins, candy, and toys from the Pinata that came with the order: slinkies, wands, spinners, and keychains. Eric went first, he wanted others to hit, first hit he missed, second hit coins went flying and everyone was surprised alarmed with coins flying everywhere!

The rest of the birthday floated into a puzzle and chatting. Some went down for dinner at 5 pm and came back. Some were drinking whiskey. It was a very lovely long day with very special people.
